Dysmenorrhea (Kashta Artava / Painful Periods)
Dysmenorrhea is called Kashta Artava in Ayurveda, literally meaning “painful menstruation.” It occurs when Vata dosha, especially Apana Vata, becomes aggravated in the pelvic region, causing spasmodic uterine contractions.
Causes (Nidana):
- Exposure to cold during menstruation
- Suppression of natural urges
- Irregular meals, excessive fasting
- Stress and lack of exercise
Pathogenesis (Samprapti):
Vitiated Vata constricts uterine channels, causing spasmodic pain, delayed or scanty flow, and disturbed Artava movement.
Symptoms (Lakshana):
- Cramping lower abdominal pain before/during menstruation
- Backache and leg pain
- Nausea, fatigue, and irritability
- Scanty or clotted menstrual flow
Ayurvedic Management:
Panchakarma Therapies:
- Abhyanga (Oil massage) with Dhanwantharam Taila or Ksheerabala Taila
