Disc Herniation (Asthi-Majjagata Vata)

Disc Herniation (Asthi-Majjagata Vata)

Disc herniation occurs when intervertebral disc material compresses spinal nerves. Ayurveda relates this to Vata aggravation in Asthi and Majja Dhatus, causing Gridhrasi-like pain radiating down the leg.

Symptoms:

  • Back pain radiating to leg
  • Numbness or tingling sensation
  • Weakness in lower limbs

Ayurvedic Management:

  • Abhyanga & Swedana: To relax muscles and reduce nerve compression.
  • Kati Basti: Continuous warm oil retention for spinal nourishment.
  • Basti: Ksheera Basti or Dashamoola Niruha Basti for root Vata control.
  • Pizhichil / Njavara Kizhi: For nourishment and pain relief.
  • Internal Medicines: Sahacharadi Kashayam, Yogaraja Guggulu, Erandamoola Taila.

Benefits:

  • Relieves pain and nerve compression
  • Strengthens spinal discs
  • Improves flexibility and mobility

Prevention:

  • Avoid heavy lifting
  • Maintain core strength
