Osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata)

Osteoarthritis (Sandhigata Vata)

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease where the cartilage that cushions bones gradually wears away. In Ayurveda, it is known as Sandhigata Vata, caused by the aggravation of Vata dosha, leading to degeneration of joint tissue and loss of lubrication. It commonly affects the knees, hips, spine, and hands.

Symptoms:

  • Joint pain and tenderness
  • Morning stiffness or pain after rest
  • Crepitus (crackling sound) during movement
  • Restricted movement or deformity in severe cases

Ayurvedic Management:

The primary goal is to pacify aggravated Vata, nourish the joints, and rejuvenate Asthi Dhatu.
Key treatments include:

    • Snehana (Oleation Therapy): Abhyanga with Dhanwantharam Thailam or Kottamchukkadi Thailam to improve lubrication and reduce stiffness.
    • Swedana (Sudation Therapy): Podi Kizhi, Ela Kizhi, or Njavara Kizhi for relieving pain and improving flexibility.
    • Basti (Medicated Enema): Matra Basti with Sahacharadi Taila or Ksheera Basti for deep Vata balance and nourishment.
    • Rasayana (Rejuvenation Therapy): Ashwagandha, Guggulu, Mahayogaraj Guggulu, and Maharasnadi Kashayam to strengthen bones and muscles.

Benefits:

  • Reduces pain and stiffness
  • Enhances joint lubrication
  • Prevents further degeneration
  • Improves strength and flexibility

Prevention:

  • Regular warm oil massage
  • Avoid cold exposure and overexertion
  • Include calcium-rich and nourishing foods like milk, ghee, and sesame
  • Maintain healthy posture and weight
