Abhyanga (Full Body Oil Massage)
Abhyanga is a classical form of Snehana Chikitsa (oleation therapy) described in the Dinacharya (daily regimen) of Ayurveda. It involves the application of warm medicated oil over the body in synchronized strokes, following the direction of the Srotas (body channels). The therapy primarily pacifies Vata dosha — the governing principle of movement — while nourishing the Mamsa (muscle), Asthi (bone), and Twak (skin) dhatus.
Sanskrit:
अभ्यङ्ग (Abhyanga) — from “Abhi” (toward) and “Anga” (limb)
Physiological Action (Kriya):
The unctuous quality (Snigdha Guna) of the herbal oil penetrates through the Romakupas (pores), reaching the deeper tissues and facilitating Srotoshodhana (channel purification). It improves peripheral circulation, enhances neuromuscular coordination, and stabilizes the autonomic nervous system.
Indications:
- Vata vitiation: stress, insomnia, anxiety
- Myalgia, arthralgia, fibromyalgia
- Dry and rough skin (Twak Rukshata)
- General fatigue and poor circulation
Benefits:
- Promotes Ojas (vital essence) and longevity
- Relieves stiffness and muscular tension
- Enhances skin tone and elasticity
- Induces deep relaxation and sleep
- Strengthens the neuromuscular system
