Nasya (Nasal Administration of Medicine)
Nasya is one of the five Panchakarma procedures, focusing on the Urdhwanga (head region). Medicated oil or decoction is administered through the nasal passages to cleanse and nourish the Shira (head) and Indriyas (sense organs). It primarily balances Kapha and Vata doshas localized in the Shira.
Sanskrit:
नस्य (Nasya) — from “Nasa” (nose)
Physiological Action (Kriya):
The nasal mucosa serves as a direct gateway to the central nervous system. The medication acts via the olfactory and trigeminal pathways, exerting anti-inflammatory and mucolytic effects, while improving oxygenation and cerebral perfusion.
Indications:
- Sinusitis (Peenasa), nasal polyps
- Migraine (Ardhavabhedaka)
- Cervical stiffness (Greeva Shoola)
- Allergic rhinitis, neuralgia
Benefits:
- Clears nasal passages and improves respiration
- Relieves headaches and heaviness in the head
- Enhances mental clarity and concentration
- Improves vision, smell, and voice quality
