Diabetes Mellitus (Madhumeha)

Diabetes, known as Madhumeha, is a Prameha subtype described in Ayurveda. It occurs due to Kapha dominance, leading to vitiation of Medas (fat), Kleda (fluids), and Ojas (vital essence), resulting in excessive urination, thirst, fatigue, and metabolic dysfunction.

Symptoms:

  • Frequent urination and thirst
  • Excessive hunger
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Slow wound healing, dryness of mouth
  • Weight loss or gain

Ayurvedic Management:

  • Panchakarma:
    • Virechana (Purgation): To balance Pitta and cleanse liver-pancreatic channels.
    • Basti (Medicated Enema): To stabilize Vata and nourish tissues.
  • Internal Medicines:
    • Nisha Amalaki Churna, Chandraprabha Vati, Vijaysar, Triphala, Gudmar, Shilajit.
  • Diet:
    • Bitter and astringent foods (bitter gourd, fenugreek)
    • Avoid sweets, dairy excess, and refined flour
  • Therapies at Dhathri:
    • Pramehahara Chikitsa, Udwarthanam, Virechana, and Navajeevana Rasayana
