Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB / Asrigdara)

Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB / Asrigdara)

Asrigdara is the classical term for excessive or irregular uterine bleeding without any structural abnormality. It occurs due to Pitta and Vata aggravation in the Artavavaha Srotas (uterine channels), leading to instability of the endometrial tissue and disturbed hormonal rhythm.

Causes (Nidana):

  • Excessive intake of spicy, sour, and salty food
  • Mental stress, anger, or emotional strain
  • Irregular sleep and eating habits
  • Overexertion, frequent childbirth, or hormonal drugs

Pathogenesis (Samprapti):

Vitiated Pitta dosha increases the heat and sharpness of Rakta Dhatu (blood), leading to excessive flow, while Vata dosha disturbs the rhythmic flow of Artava (menstrual blood), resulting in irregular or prolonged bleeding.

Symptoms (Lakshana):

  • Heavy, prolonged, or irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Fatigue, weakness, and dizziness
  • Lower abdominal pain and backache
  • Pallor and emotional instability

Ayurvedic Management:

Panchakarma Therapies:

  • Mridu Virechana (Gentle purgation): To eliminate vitiated Pitta and cleanse liver-blood channels.
  • Basti Therapy: Ksheerabala Taila or Dashamoola Taila Basti to balance Apana Vata.
  • Abhyanga and Takradhara: For hormonal and emotional stability.

Internal Medicines:

  • Ashokarishta, Lodhra Churna, Pravala Pishti, Kamadugha Ras, Shatavari, Musta
  • Raktapitta Nivarana Yoga for cooling and hemostatic effect.

Dhathri Therapies:

  • Menstrual Balance Programme
  • Raktashuddhi & Hormonal Detox Chikitsa
  • Mano Shanti Stress Care (for mind–hormone balance)

Benefits:

  • Normalizes menstrual flow and duration
  • Strengthens uterine tissues and regulates hormones
  • Prevents recurrence of irregular bleeding
  • Rejuvenates overall reproductive health

Prevention:

  • Avoid excessive stress, spicy foods, and heat exposure
  • Maintain regular sleep and meal schedule
  • Practice yoga postures like Baddha Konasana and Supta Virasana
