“Avagāha” means immersion or bathing the body in medicated decoction or oil, and “Swedam” means fomentation therapy.
Avagāha Sweda is a Snigdha-Sweda Karma — an oleation-based fomentation method that pacifies Vāta and Kapha doshas, especially in Śūla (pain), Stambha (stiffness), and Gaurava (heaviness). It improves circulation through Srotoshodhana (channel purification).
The patient is made to sit or recline in a specially designed tub filled with warm medicated decoctions (Kashaya), oils (Taila), or liquids like Dhanyamla. The temperature is maintained warm throughout the procedure (about 40–45°C). The session lasts 15–30 minutes, depending on the condition.
